We are currently in the process of finishing the analysis of this section of the research. We will use this information to help us to deliver our workshops in the next stage of the research and it will help us to develop the implementation resource. This will make sure that the implementation resource is based on the experiences of children and families, and the healthcare professionals involved in their care.
SPOT-LITE Study 1
What affects the set up of photobiomodulation
services & what do families want from these services?
This first study in the SPOT-LITE project explores the factors that influence the set up of photobiomodulation services and how they are run. We asked children and young people who have received photobiomodulation, and their parents, about their experiences of receiving the treatment. They have told us what they think works well and what needs to be improved in receiving the treatment. We wanted to speak to a range of children and young people of different ages, in different parts of the country. We interviewed a total of 4 children and young people and 4 of their parents to this part of the study.
We also interviewed 17 healthcare professionals from 11 different children’s cancer centres and 1 professional from the photobiomodulation equipment industry. Some of these children’s cancer centres have been delivering photobiomodulation for a long time, others only more recently, and some are still in the process of starting up a photobiomodulation service. They have told us about their experiences of setting up these services, what makes this difficulty, and what would help other people.
Families in our Patient and Public Involvement Group, supported by the Candlelighters Supportive Care Research Centre, have helped us to make sense of our study findings. They helped us to make sure we understood what families have said and how they think different interview quotes fit together into groups with things in common, called “themes”.
